Panama

Wow! I cannot believe how horrible of a blogger I have been. I promise I will try to do better...think of it as a New Year's resolution!

At the end of February, Kevin and I went to Panama. We arrived in Panama around 7pm on Saturday, February 27. When Kevin was on the Oasis last October, he met a girl from Panama named Rachel, and she picked us up from the airport. She took us on a quick tour of Panama City and then dropped us off at the hotel. We had just enough time to change before she came back with her husband, Robert, to take us out for dinner. We ate at this incredible restaurant called Jimmy's - a Greek restaurant, but with great seafood! I am not one to choose to eat seafood, but tried everything that was put in front of me. We had plantains, fried eggplant, mussels, ceviche, snapper and whitefish! It was sooo delicious! After dinner, Rachel and Robert took us on another small tour of  the city. On the way back to the hotel we stopped at a street full of night clubs and bars (the name right now escapes me) and Kevin and Robert had a glass of 30 year old rum - apparently this was quite the treat! We got back to the hotel around midnight and crashed!

Eating some mussels and drinking a Panamanian Beer.

This is the snapper we ate! Kind of scary to look at, but tasted oh so good!

On Sunday, we went to the ship. The ship docked in a city named Colon, which is apparently a very dangerous city. So Rachel helped us hire a driver to take us up to Colon. Our driver took us right to the ship (about an hour north of Panama City), waited for us while we worked, and then took us back to Panama City. On the way back to Panama City, we briefly (about 5 minutes) stopped at the Panama Canal! I told Kevin before we left, if we saw nothing else, I wanted to see the Canal. So even though we didn't spend much time there, I was so glad to see the canal!

This is the Canal at the Pedro Miguel Locks. You can see a large cargo ship going through the locks on the left of the photo. Pretty neat to see!

Just me!

When we got back to the hotel we took a little nap and then Rachel picked us up and brought us to her house. She had a party earlier in the afternoon and had a lot of left over food, so we helped her get rid of some of the food! We also had the privilege of meeting her mother and father in-law. Such a great experience to spend time with 'locals." Rachel took us back to the hotel and we got ready for our early flight out the next morning. It was a very quick trip, but we had a wonderful time! Hopefully we will have the chance to go back again! It sure was nice having our own personal tour guide! And maybe next time I will do better with photos! Sorry for the delay!
